It wasn't until the 1980s that people started to stockpile mint in box toys in the hope that they would appreciate in value.
Earlier toys are very rare mint in unopened boxes.
The more obscure the toy, the rarer it is in untouched form.

The first LEGO castle set, it features hinged walls which allow it to be opened up to display the interior. The horses are built from bricks. Released in Europe, Australia and Canada only.
Very, very rare in sealed original box. Will sell for $10K+ if one ever comes to market.

But there is no arguing with the sales results. Several have changed hands between $2K and $3K complete with box, one for $2,300 without box or manual!

This 500-piece limited edition was given away at LEGO stores around the world. Apparently, Belgium got 100 of the 500 pieces (not sure why).
They sell on eBay from time to time. One is listed now with an asking price of $11K or best offer, but that seems very optimistic.

Everybody loves LEGO sharks, and there is one included in this cool pirate ship set. Rare sealed in the box, a complete set unboxed sold for $2K in 2024 and other sold for $750.
Every year, LEGO hosts tours of its factory sites. People who pay $2K+ for the tours all receive an exclusive tour LEGO set, which changes every year.
These often show up on the most expensive LEGO set lists. They are never available for sale to the general public, so LEGO collectors grab any opportunity to acquire them.
