When talking about Dungeons and Dragons, it's important to recognize what we mean by books.
We are not including rule box sets in this guide.
There are lots of rulebooks, the original hardback ones being Dungeon Master's Guide, Player's Handbook and Monster Manual.
There are many versions of the basic rules, from edition one through the new 5e revision.

Since the 1980s, lots of spin-off books have expanded on the rules system. Some of these are included on the page below.

This Dungeons and Dragons book expands the world of monsters to make the Dungeon Master's life easier. First published in 1977, it was reprinted several times over the years.
How to identify the first printing: the cover has the lizard logo, with red-lettered Advanced Dungeons & Dragons at top and TM Reg Applied For in small red letters underneath. The spine also had Advanced Dungeons & Dragons in red letters but no TM symbol. There is no ISBN number, the endpapers and flyleaves are red and the interior pages are smooth.

How to identify the first printing: While there are many smaller ways to identify the true first printing, the most reliable is the text "Advanced D&D" in the yellow banner at the top left is too large, and the final D is cut off by the edge of the cover.

This was the ultimate resource for players undertaking the complex world of Dungeons and Dragons.
How to identify the true first printing: the cover has the Wizard logo. Advanced Dungeons & Dragons is centered on the cover top, with Players Handbook (in white lettering) towards the bottom. There is no ISBN. The endpapers and flyleaves are white; the next printing has yellow endpapers and flyleaves.
