Rarest Star Wars Comics: 35 Cent Price Variants of 1977

Star Wars #1 35 cent variantStar Wars #1 35 cent variant
Star Wars #2 35 cent variantStar Wars #2 35 cent variant
Star Wars #3 35 cent variantStar Wars #3 35 cent variant
Star Wars #4 35 cent variantStar Wars #4 35 cent variant

Before we get into the regular issues, we need to touch on the expensive 1977 price variants. These are the most valuable Star Wars comic books of all.

They do turn up from time to time. When they do, they are always eagerly snapped up by collectors!

WHAT TO LOOK FOR:

  • "35c" price in square box at top left (see images above)
  • UPC bar code at bottom left

If BOTH those are true, then congratulations! You have a 35 cent price variant!

WHEN IT'S NOT A VARIANT:

  • If the price box is a diamond instead of a square
  • If there is a blank box at bottom left instead of a bar code

Sadly, there are lots of confusing versions of the first four issues of Star Wars comics by Marvel.

There are 30c prices and 35c prices. With and without UPC codes at bottom left. With a diamond price box or a square. With the word REPRINT to the left of Luke Skywalker.

Reprints are not valuable unless they are absolutely perfect.

Star Wars #1 35 Cent Price Variant

Lowest price $750

Average price $6,000

Record price $56,400

Marvel Comics produced two periods of test market price variants, to determine whether their customers would still buy comics at a higher price point.

The 35 Cent ones are quite scarce and this is the most valuable of them all.

Star Wars #2 35 Cent Price Variant

Lowest price $500

Average price $1,200

Record price $8,100

Nowhere near as valuable as issue #1, which is really strange because there are exactly 50 percent LESS of them in the CGC census.

I guess everybody just wants the first issue.

Star Wars #3 35 Cent Price Variant

Lowest price $300

Average price $1,000

Record price $4,500

There are only 98 of these in the census, compared to 298 of the #1 issue.

The market still doesn't care. The values are much less than issue #1. But this is still a great Star Wars comic to find.

Star Wars #4 35 Cent Price Variant

Lowest price $300

Average price $700

Record price $12,600

There are 116 of these in the census. The record sale is because a CGC 9.8 hit the market.

You should be happy if you find one in any condition, as they are worth at least 10x what the regular issue is worth.
