Value of Vintage Horror Comic Art Pages

What is Vintage Horror Comic Art Worth?

There are plenty of sales of old horror comic books to assist you in figuring out their values.

Vintage horror comic art can be really valuableVintage horror comic art can be really valuable

But original comic art is unique. Every page is a 1 of 1.

This means the market for that piece only exists when each one changes hands.

Each time a piece is sold, it sets the bar for the value of that (or very similar) pieces of original art.

Any piece of original comic art has value. Covers are worth the most, then splash pages, then interior pages, with sketches and other unpublished pieces being the least desirable.

The more gross the art, the more valuable the original art which created it.

The more action, the grosser the imagery, the better collectors like these pages; and the more they will sell for when you bring them to market.

A lot of sales of vintage horror art have been entire stories. Some of those pages will be better than others, but it's hard to value a single page from a story.

If you have original vintage horror comic art and need help figuring out what it's worth, then get in touch.

We will appraise them for you free of charge, or buy them for cash!

Value of Vintage Horror Cover Art

Black Cat Mystery #50
Cover art by Lee Elias

Record price $840,000

This is the world record for a pre-Code horror comic art sale, and unlikely to be beaten unless one of the other crown jewels of the niche turn up for sale.

The iconic radiation-rotting face makes the actual comic book one of the most valuable horror comics of all time. So it makes sense that this cover art sold for so much.

Walking Dead #51
Cover art by Charlie Adlard

Record price $13,800

Walking Dead comics are a cultural sensation.

First published in 2003, they were made into a hugely successful TV series by AMC. This cover is from 2008.

The Haunt of Fear #15 (#1)
Cover art by Johnny Craig

Record price $264,000

The liquidating of the archives of 1950s publishers like EC Comics and Harvey Comics have resulted in plenty of top-tier vintage horror comic art coming to market.

One of just a few pre-Code horror comic covers to break the $250K barrier.

Treehouse of Horror #2
Cover art by Bill Morrison

Record price $3,000

The Simpsons has been producing a Halloween special Treehouse of Horror episode every season. Bongo Comics produced a comic book in the 1990s.

This shows that modern cover art isn't necessarily very expensive. A relatively affordable piece of comic book history for Simpsons fans.

Tomb of Darkness #14
Cover art by Tom Palmer inking over Gil Kane

Record price $2,400

Gil Kane wasn't attributed for the pencils, but it's in his style and he was working for Marvel at this time.

Tales of Horror #2
Cover art by Myron Fass

Record price $13,800

Toby Press was a small publisher which produced several horror comic titles. This is a really cool cover and it's easy to see why it sold for five figures.

House of Secrets #130
Cover art by Ernie Chan

Record price $3,840

A classic ghost ship cover image from the cover of a 1970s horror comic by DC.

Arken Sword #17
Cover art by Steve Bissette

Record price $3,480

Steve Bissette worked on the Swamp Thing title not long after this cover featuring the character was published.

Value of Splash Page Vintage Horror Art

Supernatural Thrillers #4
Full story by Win Mortimer

Record price $2,900

A lot of average art pages aren't worth much on their own, so they can be found for sale in complete story lots including the splash pages.

This is a classic Marvel horror comics art page of the 1970s.

Many Ghosts of Dr. Graves
Splash page by Steve Ditko

Record price $2,300

Ditko was a master of pencil and ink. His style is uniquely suited to dark, gritty 70s horror comics.

A splash page from an unidentified issue of Dr. Graves.

Monster World #2: The Mummy's Hand
by Joe Orlando and Russ Jones

Record price $1,610

This Golden Age horror comics art was later reprinted in Creepy #17.

Tales from the Crypt #21
Full story by Al Feldstein

Record price $43,200

This classic splash page is just part of the complete 8-page story by master of Golden Age horror, Al Feldstein.

Marvel Spotlight #3
Splash page by Mike Ploog

Record price $38,400

Marvel horror comics enjoyed a surge in interest a couple of years ago, though their values have dropped off lately.

Archie #123
Full story by Harry Lucey and Martin Epp

Record price $1,860

There is a very popular sub-set of Archie comics which are horror themed.

Archie original art is not usually very valuable.

Tales to Astonish #27
Full book original art including splash page by Jack Kirby and others

Record price $65.,000

The first appearance of Hank Pym, aka Ant-Man, in this pre-Hero issue of Tales to Astonish, is a massively important art piece.

It last sold over 20 years ago, and will smash this price whenever it is resold. By the "King" Jack Kirby, with Ditko, Heck and Forgione, it is a sale for the entire interior of this huge key issue. Astonishing!

Stephen King's Creepshow
Contents table by Bernie Wrightson

Record price $3,100

While this piece was not published in a comic book, Wrightson's work is hotly collected.

Forbidden Tales of Dark Mansion #8
Splash page by Michael Kaluta

Record price $3,000

A highly-detailed splash page which perfectly showcases DC horror comics of the 1970s.

Beyond the Grave #1
Splash page by Steve Ditko

Record price $3,120

The value of original art is in the amount of detail and the subject matter.

This is a striking but simple splash page by a popular artist.

WHYITSIMPORTANT

Witches Tales #13
7-Page story by Lee Elias

Record price $4,550

A classic Golden Age horror Lee Elias interior story, which sold for a quite reasonable amount.

Eerie #9
Page 5 by Neal Adams

Record price $1,550

This is a great illustration of how much you can expect an interior page, even by a famous artist, to sell for.

Note that the image is mostly dialog, without anything horrific shown.

Tomb of Dracula #5
Page 13 by Gene Colan

Record price $3,120

Here's a great contrast to the previous page.

Colan isn't the name that Adams is, but this is a much better interior page with lots of action.

Web of Horror #1
4 page story by Ralph Reese

Record price $3,825

A little-known artist, but a fun monster-themed vintage horror comic art interior page.

Creepy #1
Page 5 by Angelo Torres

Record price $3,360

A mix of action and dialog from the late 1960s Warren title.

Sandman #10
Page 19 by Mike Dringenberg

Record price $4,680

Sandman is a classic series written by Neil Gaiman in the late 1980s. A cool interior page featuring witches.

Secrets of Haunted House #18: Page 4 by Ruben Yandoc

Record price $84

An unknown artist, a relatively unpopular title and an average subject.

This shows how even an original page of vintage horror comic art can be worth quite a small amount.

Savage Sword of Conan #21: Page 25 by John Buscema

Record price $720

Buscema is a popular artist, the subject is decent and the title is well-known.

But the lack of action probably holds back the value of this piece.

Unpublished Marvel Horror
6 pages by Herbe Trimpe

Record price $600

Trimpe is most famous for his work on Incredible Hulk.

Six pages which sold for about $100 each show that the lack of publication really holds back the value of vintage horror comic art.
