Top 10 Wolverine Comic Book List

Most Expensive 10 Wolverine Comic Book List

Wolverine is the one of the world's most popular comic book superheroes.

Wolverine is a hugely popular comic book characterWolverine is a hugely popular comic book character

Originally introduced as an enemy of the Incredible Hulk, Wolverine went on to form part of the new X-Men team, starring in books like Giant-Size X-Men #1 and X-Men #94.

While he's very popular with fans, there aren't all that many valuable Wolverine comics.

The ones which do have value are highly dependent upon condition.

Modern comics need to be virtually untouched to have value.

Below are the top 10 comics featuring Wolverine.

If you have any of those books, or similar ones from the same era, then get in touch and we'll value them for you FREE!

Top 10 Wolverine Comic Book Issues by Value

Incredible Hulk #180
First Wolverine Comic Book Cameo

Lowest price $75

Average price $650

Recent 9.8 Sale $18,000

Record price $40,000

He only appears on the final page, but this is technically the first appearance of Wolverine. For people who feel priced out of the Hulk #181 market, this is the next best thing.

A Word About Marvel Value Stamps (MVS)

The interior pages of many Marvel Comics from the 1970s, including some of the most expensive, were published with Marvel Value stamps.

These resembled postage stamps. Collectors could obtain stamp albums, and were encouraged to collect all the stamps, which naturally meant collecting all the comics first.

Here are the most expensive comics which might be missing their MVS:

  • Incredible Hulk #180, 181, 182
  • Marvel Premiere #15
  • Thor #225
  • Invaders #1
  • Giant-Size Defenders #3
  • Doctor Strange #1
  • Captain Marvel #33
  • Astonishing Tales #25
  • Amazing Spider-Man #130, 134, 135

It's wise to check the interior pages of all the major key issues, to ensure the MVS has not been cut out of the inner pages, before you buy raw copies.

CGC checks these for you. When CGC certifies books missing their MVS, the label is green (qualified), and the book is worth a fraction of the value of a complete equivalent.

Incredible Hulk #181
First full Wolverine appearance

Lowest price $1,000

Average price $3,500

Record price $154,000

One of THE must-own Bronze Age comic books, the first full appearance of Wolverine is a nailed-on classic.

Sought-after in any grade, and changes hands rapidly!

Incredible Hulk #182
Third Wolverine appearance

Lowest price $40

Average price $200

Record price $6,500

The poor man's Hulk #180, which is itself the poor man's Hulk #181.

So it's the poor-poor man's Hulk #181. Or something.

Giant-Size X-Men #1
First appearance of the New X-Men

Lowest price $500

Average price $2,000

Record price $72,000

One-time 9.9 sale $170,000

A brand new start for the X-Men, rebooting the franchise. Featuring Storm, Wolverine (second full appearance), Nightcrawler, Colossus and Thunderbird.

Bloated record sale during the pandemic bubble. A recent sale of CGC 9.8 is a more realistic $35,000.

We don't consider the 9.9 price repeatable, so it's not factored into the position on this price guide.

X-Men #94
First new X-Men team

Lowest price $75

Average price $700

Recent 9.8 Sale $34,000

Record price $66,000

The first new issue after the hiatus, featuring a new team, including Wolverine.

Another unrepeatable record that won't be reached again for many years. Thanks, Covid.

FOOM #2
Prototype Wolverine by a reader

Lowest price $100

Average price $400

Record price $33,600

There is a lot of controversy about the creation of Wolverine. FOOM was a fanzine published by Marvel.

The interior of FOOM #2 featured "The Wolverine" by a reader. Should that person be credited with the creation of the character?

Unlikely to ever be sold again for the same price as this pandemic craziness.

Wolverine Limited Series #1 (1982)
First solo comic

Lowest price $20

Average price $125

Record price $15,600 (CGC 9.9)
$14,000 (CGC 10.0)
$1,365 CGC 9.8

Frank Miller's limited series re-imagined Wolverine, and established the character as a mainstay in the Marvel universe.

Various versions exist, including newsstand variants and Canadian price variants.

Wolverine #1 (1988)
First Patch

Lowest price $5

Average price $50

Record price $1,020

Published in the late 1980s, high-grade copies of these are common.

Sales above $4K for a CGC 9.9 and a one-off $17K for a CGC 10.0 are anomalies.

Wolverine #145
Nabisco mail-away variant

Lowest price $150

Average price $1,000

Record price $6,480

Nabisco were involved in a promotion with Marvel, which resulted in this mail-away variant cover. Very collectible.

Wolverine #310
Variant edition

Lowest price $100

Average price $250

Record price $2,300

There are many valuable variant comics. It's a bit of a minefield though, there are so many which don't gain any value. This book is worthy of its place on the top Wolverine comic book list.
